I cried the other day.
In the middle of the day.
When Daddy was at work.
Big long sobs.
My father had called me with sad family news.
My son had never seen me cry like that before.
His face turned serious
His brow furrowed.
He came over and patted my back.
He leaned his head against my arm.
Over and over and over he told me that it was okay.
He disappeared upstairs.
He returned with his favorite thing in the whole world.
The quilt that my mother had made for him before he was born.
The one I had wrapped him up in every night of his life.
The one he holds and strokes as he drifts to sleep.
The one that has soaked up tears.
And he handed it to me because
He didn't know what else to do.
It was then that I realized
that mother is not just a noun.
Mother is a verb.
Happy Mother's Day to all of those who mother.
