The Outside

Hello 1977.  The  tudor windows help, don't you think?
I love them and they take the edge off my renovation nightmares.

"Might I have a bit of earth??"
(name that book/movie)

Backyard.
Our property goes back into these woods.  picturing: rope swings, bonfires, swiss family robinson.

There is some serious outside work to do, but most of it will go on the back burner and wait until next spring.  I read once somewhere that it is best to live in a house during every season so you can see what is growing before making any decisions and digging anything up/planting anything.  We totally have our work cut out for us.  I do plan on doing some light landscaping in the front flower beds for the next few months because I need some mums and ornamental kale every fall/early winter.  If you have never planted ornamental kale, think about it.  They are less than $5 a head, usually 3 for $10 at my favorite local nursery and they last all the way until the first snowfall pretty much.  My mother's kale in California lasts through the whole winter.  It is tough and cool loving and looks gorgeous mixed with mums in the fall.  Here are some pictures I found here and here and here.  Wish I had access to my pictures from last fall to show you our own kale/mum front porch extravaganza.

More 1977 updates to come this week.

I always wondered what that stuff was, I thought it was overgrown cabbage. It looks really pretty with the mums. I may have to try that, anything easy sounds good to me in the garden. I have this cherry tomato plant that is producing endless amounts of them. I have no idea what I did(if I did anything at all) but it is one happy plant. It looks like weeds at this point but there are tons of tomatoes on it. We eat them like candy around here! Stake YW...you will be awesome.

I'm so excited for you and the new house! I know the renovations are hard, but I think the house will be beautiful when you're done. I love those windows!

I'm so glad you said something about the kale. I just put some in my flower pots for my balcony (no flower beds in the condo), along with some pansies to put some fall color on my porch.

Hope things are going well! Miss you!

I adore your house. It looks like the perfect place to build a beautiful garden complete with a backyard swing where you could sit and read for hours enjoying the peace of nature.

Are you kidding me Miss Thing?? Awesome! The house is gorgeous and with your touch it's going to end up in some magazine one day!

The outside definitely makes up for all that hideous carpet that you tore up.
Mature yards and trees are another great thing about older homes. You never know what grandma planted there...you may have a whole yard of daffodils come spring or camilla's for the winter.
It's all coming along nicely.

Yes, Brittany, can't wait for that day!

And thank you Chez, the outside will be fun to watch and work on. I kind of just have to let it go for now though, ya know? I will cross my fingers for daffodils.

Having been born in 1977, I still say it is the best year for a house...or anything for that matter :)

I am going to get some ornamental kale this fall! I love mums, and those photos look so pretty! I dont' think I've ever seen any mums that were red, I love them! Someone told me that Costco had good mums. True?? Anyway, love your plans!
