And that's because they haven't. In fact, I can't remember the last time I was in a hotel..... but that is beside the point.
We checked into the Portsmouth New Hampshire Sheraton mid-afternoon today. David has work meetings up here all week and we tagged along. It was a 7 hour drive. We left this morning the first time at 5:30, and then a second time at 6:00 after returning for some forgottens.
Uneventful road trip, except when I accidentally tipped over the bag of Swiss Mix, which is someone's fancy name for what I grew up calling GORP.
*********
not debatable: Swiss Mix sounds nicer than gorp.
debatable: that the Swiss are okay with us calling this mixture Swiss. (can we get a confirmation Sarah? -- Sarah is our resident Swiss expert -- is this Swiss?: cashews, peanuts, m&m's and raisins)
*********
You should have seen David's face when the contents spilled into the console area of his "sportswagon". I immediately said to him,
don't look.
And then I picked up every crumb because I love him and his fancy pants car and he hates that kind of mess and I always make that kind of mess because I am clumsy and crumby (but not crummy).
I ended up licking my finger and pressing it into the cup holder areas to get every crumb. And I may have eaten some crumbs that were not Swiss Mix crumbs. But the things I do for love.
And I just grossed you out. maybe?
So we grab some lunch and david has to run back to the hotel (dun-na-nuh-na-nuhh ----) (who got that last line?) for some business meetings and so the fellas and I walk to this darling toy store and we are admiring and loving and playing and then ...
what is that smell?
It's my child. no bathroom, no place to change him. We walk the 4 or so blocks back to the hotel. But not before I buy this book.
Back to the room. I change him. Max is over playing in the sheer curtains. Oliver joins him. I call my mother in law to tell her that we are safe (yes I do that still and Mommy, I tried to call you too, but no answer) and then they were climbing on the air conditioner.
That is not okay I tell them.
I pull out the new book and read stories. Max is interested, Swabbs is not. He is interested in the wine glasses. "I'm having a drink" he tells me. I laugh at the thought.. and then I don't laugh and say, don't touch those, they will break. I put the glass back and turn. He has it again. And then Max picks the other one up and says "let's do cheers Oliver!" and I think how does he know that? and then I say, give me those glasses. And I put the wine glasses out of reach at the top of the closet.
I turn to see Oliver with the large "If you drink this you will owe $5" bottle of water in his hands. I take it from him. Oliver wails. He is thirsty.
Put two large $5 bottles of water in closet. Get two wrapped plastic cups from bathroom sink, take plastic off and fill with sink water. Give to boys.
Back to story. read read read.
what is that smell? It smells hot.
Looks like Oliver took the liberty to crank up the temp and kick the heater on.
awesome.
I remind them not to touch, stand on or play with the AC.
Oliver has the camera and wants to take a picture. take camera. Max has the bottle opener. Take bottle opener. Oliver has the ice tongs. Take ice tongs.
Camera in the closet, bottle opener in the closet, ice tongs in the closet.
read read read.
ALARM RADIO BLASTS THROUGH THE ROOM.
"Oliver, honey, please don't touch the alarm"
"Oliver honey, please don't touch that phone"
"Yes, Max you are right, kids don't drink that coffee"
"Oliver honey, please don't touch that other phone"
Max turns on the TV.
I put the book down and concede.
Our choices: spongebob and some animal planet special about elaborate pet houses -- like "Cribs" for animals or something.
We watch "Cribs" for animals.
I am interested, they are not.
They figure out how to leap from bed to bed.
I allow it and email David.
He replies he will be back in ten minutes.
Hello sweet working husband -- If you are looking for the ice tongs or wine glasses, they are in the closet.
We go out to Annabelle's Natural Ice Cream for dinner.
the end.

Amen...hotel's with kids is not rad! and Max probably learned cheers from Brielle, who learned it from some other kid! What to do, What to do!
haha. I had no idea. Note to self.
And here I'm getting ready to take Lukas on his first plane ride. BY MYSELF!! An I crazy?
Any tips?
This is why I refuse to road trip unless we can stay at an Air Force base (one of the perks of the government owning you). Because on the base you can get "family" rooms, which means you can actually have a seperate bedroom from the kiddo's, so you can put them to bed without having to turn off all the lights and walk around ninja style for the rest of the night trying not to wake them. Sometimes I feel like a sissy for not wanting to go anywhere if we have to go to a regular hotel...now I know it's not just me. Thanks and hang in there.
YAY!!! I am sooooo envious of your trip to New Hampshire. That is one of my dream destinations. Well, technically it is Vermont, but they are pretty much the same thing, right? I even made Chris apply to Dartmouth for grad school. My other dream destination Montana, which really works out since my sister is moving there in September.
HAVE SO MUCH FUN!

Looks like a good time was had by all! You are very good at corralling your children...if it were me, those wine glasses would have been broken and i would have owed $5 for a stinkin bottle of water ;0)
hahaha! yeah, that sounds pretty close to every hotel experience I've had with my children. We are just not meant to live in one room all together.
trail mix, not swiss mix. isn't swiss mix hot chocolate?
I wish I wasn't oncall this week or I'd drive up and have dinner with you all. Maybe I'll see if someone can take the my oncall one evening, but I should probably do that for Friday anyway...you're still coming?
linda - swiss MISS is hot chocolate. Swiss Mix is what they called the trail mix we bought. I have seen it called that before and I always wonder about it. We would love for you to come up here. We went to the beach this morning and it was lovely. There are so many fun places up here. We will have to talk later. I didn't realize that Boston is only like an hour from here. It would be great if you could come up for an evening -- we could explore Portland together!
tenille, pretty much I am NOT good at it! They were out of control! They have calmed down now that the newness has worn a little...
Leslie, I bet you have done this more than us with your dance trips! you are a pro by now!
Sounds like you are having a good time! I have spent many a nights in hotels with little ones. They loved jumping from bed to bed. They still do it now but only like once. Fun memories, traditions for them. What beach did you go to today? I was trying to tell you about the Portland Head lighthouse. It is in Cape Elizabeth and it is beautiful if you like that sort of thing. Great picture area with rock climbing, tidal areas. There is a park around it so it has lots of space for the boys to run around too.
Hilarious. HILARIOUS. WHere do I start. I have no idea why they called that mix Swiss because I am the Swiss expert. Maybe because of the chocolate... but m&ms sooooo aren't swiss.
Anyway, FUN TRIP! Hotels with kids isn't fun... but something is fun about it. I guess hanging out in a hotel room with kids is not fun. THat's it.
Thanks Sarah. I knew I could count on you. Doesn't seem to swill to me either considering the delicious chocolate that you brought for us from the source of all things swiss ---- Switzerland.
the hotel has been more and more fun every day. Max said "I really like living here!" ha ha.... too bad he has to go back to a poorly air-conditioned 1977...
ha ha ha!! You always make me giggle!! Fun times in a hotel with kids :)
I enjoyed getting caught up with you today... just got back from another wonderful week at Big Meadow.
One of the best parts??
Sharing our infamous, lengthy drive to Big Meadow that included a dead body!!
Good times :)
Now you see how every single night of our cross country road trips ended. Except we finally realized that for all our sanity we needed a hotel that had a pool. Tire out kids for a few hours. Baiscally, when they are all pruney, it must be time for bed.
