I wear aprons when I cook. Fun vintage aprons. I've collected them through the years of thrifting and yard-sale-ing and flea-marketing. I had to chuckle though at the irony I found in dropping my cell phone into the pocket of my flowery apron a few months ago. I wondered about the original intention of such a small little pocket. Measuring spoons? hankie? clothespins? a handful of feed?
Not a cell phone. Most definitely not a cell phone.

This is me. Caught in between a time I adore and a time I live in. I love both for different reasons. I love simplicity, homemaking, beauty in the ordinary and mundane chores of life. I love busyness, productivity and efficiency. I struggle to connect the two, making a beautiful busy life.

While in North Carolina we went to Pullen Park in the Raleigh area. It had a restored 100 year old carousel and equally old vintage boat and train ride. Each cost a dollar to ride. The boat and carousel rides were at least 5 minutes long. The longest I have ever seen on a carnival type ride. It's like the seasoned conductors knew just how long to let the children ride so as to not have crying, wanting, screaming children leave their appointed station. Each child left satisfied. No tears were shed, no "I WANNA GO AGAIN!!!!"'s were heard. It was almost to the point where you could say, please let me off of this ride, but not quite.

I had to chuckle again as I went round and round the carousel with my one hand holding Swabby on my hip and my other hand steadying my nephew Benson on a fancy pig. I looked down to the middle of the carousel through the glorious horses, cats and ostriches to see the 70-ish year old man conductor in a candy striped jacket and top hat, texting someone on his cell phone.

He obviously struggles too.
BOB: Hey Judd, after our shift wanna go and grab a dog and a soda at the concession stand?
JUDD: Sure, Bob, c-ya there
A lovely reminder of the simplicity and beauty of the past with a gentle reminder of today.

My apron pocket holds my iPod.
I love your reflections. I find myself agreeing with what everything you write but never slowing down enough in my own life to have such insight. You're very clever.

I love those things, too. I especially love hearing people saying that out loud. Because sometimes I forget that I love it.
I want more aprons! And I hate it because I have only one and I always forget to even put it on!
I know, that park was so perfect.
I don't have an apron. I also realized recently that I have no pot holders in my kitchen. I bought some ready made cookie dough and had to take the cookies out of the oven with a towel. I think I should travel back to my roots.
And I did just view your blog and post these comments from my blackberry. Tomorrow I'm gonna look for a merry go round.
You are wonderful Tiffany! Brielle still talks about her cousin Max...I wish we could see you guys!
Last year I was going through my Grandmother's spare room closet. I found a old apron. She said she wore it for 30 years. I admired it and replaced it. The next month, I opened my birthday gift from her and low and behold it was the vintage apron. I cried. It was the best birthday gift ever! I wear it proudly. Now I know what to put in the pocket!
I love that expression on Oliver's face when he is sitting on the back of the boat behind the older boys!
