ice. pellets.
I have wanted them.
bad.
for weeks.
The kind you get in the hospital.
I jokingly told my visiting teacher, who happens to be a nurse, that I would give her an ice chest to sneak in during her shift to get me some of that ice. I told her it was her duty as my visiting teacher to bring me a cup of that ice when she left work. I joked and joked about it. But guess what --- I wasn't joking.
I needed that ice.
She told me it might be a sign of dehydration.
I drank more.
I racked my brain trying to think of where I could get that ice. I didn't know one restaurant that had it. Where is a darn Sonic when you NEED one?? Should I start calling around to restaurants I hadn't gone to to see if they had some? I did know a few nurses and people with hospital hookups -- I needed to sound more convincing. I remembered that athletic trainers use that ice for icing sprains and injuries -- did I know any coaches or trainers at any schools locally? no.
did you know they have countertop ice pellet machines?
(happy mother's day?)
A couple weeks had gone by and without having found my heart's desire, I settled for Target Rocket Pops. very delicious. but not ice pellets.
Imagine my absolute incredulousness when I found it today and wasn't even looking for it! You see, I was just walking along in a grassy flowered meadow when I saw a rainbow and at the end of that rainbow was a pot and in that pot I found ice pellets.
ICE PELLETS!
Just kidding, it was in Shoprite - a grocery store in Aberdeen, MD. no rainbow pot. Just a lot of shellfish bathed in the most delicious looking ice nuggety-pellets. My mouth watered. a lot.
Would it taste fishy if I grabbed a handful and ate it?
Would it LOOK fishy if I grabbed a handful and ate it?
I didn't care about looking fishy, but I did care about the taste.
I looked for help. No seafood attendant people. I ring the service bell.
A seafood man walks out from the swinging double doors holding a fishing pole and a large net. Just kidding. But he does say,
"Can I help you?"
and I say,
"Uhmmm... this is going to sound crazy but is there any way, I mean, is it possible for me to......do you think I could have some.... ice? Like, do you have a cup and I can have some ice in it? I will pay you. Like, I will pay you lots."
"You want ice?"
"Yes. that's what I want." (was I panting? maybe.)
"You can just have it"
He gives me one of those deli size containers you get potato salad in -- like a pound of potato salad. And he also gives me HEAVEN.
Oliver and I chomped and chomped while we picked up the last three things on our list -- red wine vinegar, pecans and lemonade (delicious).
I was a very happy girl.
So, a little bit more to add to the story - I went to google a couple nights ago and wanted to figure out what craving ice could mean -- dehydration? something else?
yes, something else. anemia.
hmm.... I thought. interesting. Especially because I was told this last fall. But I was only borderline.
So, after finally finding the end of the rainbow at SHOPRITE this morning, I get a call this afternoon from Stacy, the OBGYN nurse.
"We got your pregnancy blood work back from the lab --- you're anemic"
I wasn't surprised. Especially because I have loco crazy meat aversion while pregnant and especially because I come to find out that all of the loads and loads of iron rich spinach I had been eating is actually not a good source of iron after all. It is an iron deplete-r.
whatever popeye!
So I need to go to the store to get some OTC iron supplements.
And I think I will choose to get those at Shoprite.
And take the long way to the Pharmacy.

I would LOVE an ice machine like that! I would even settle for a good snow cone machine ;0) Seriously, why arent there Sonics in EVERY city?!
ooooh, that sounds good. They make AWESOME Italian Sodas too. No other ice will do. No, no other. You know!
Pellet ice is heaven. So glad you found some. I'm astounded that spinach is actually an iron-depleter What's that all about?
If I'd KNOWN I would have told you to get to a grocery store post haste. Day's Market has pellet ice in their machine and will sell it to you by the huge bagful, so I figure some grocery near you must have the same thing. I was right!
Crazy! I would never have thought that craving ice ment low iron. I just assume all cravings are part of being pregnant. Hmmmmm...this is going to sound so weird but the other night I was brushing my teeth and seriously had to hold myself back from drinking the mouth wash. I WANTED it sooooo bad...lol! But I know you can't drink it so I didn't. Atleast you have a healthy craving...lol! And low iron in relativley easy to take care of.
have you thought of getting a plain snowball?
I crave THE EXACT SAME THING when I am pregnant. One word: Wegman's. Of course they have this ice! It is a perfect grocery store! You can go over to the cafe area, get a cup for water (in my case I would take two or three) and then bring it around with you while you shop. Genius! I was not officially anemic, but I'd heard that as well. Not to be gross, but if you are taking an iron supplement, make sure to take a stool softner with it. :) Love you!
I crave that ice regularly and actually have one of those ice machines on my wish list for when we are rich, along with a fountain coke machine. Every Christmas I ask for one, but I must not be good enough because Santa never brings me one.
When we left the hospital after Owen was born, I made josh bring all the giant mugs we have at home and load them up. I know we have a Sonic but I hate to go just to get a cup of ice :)
Oh and I just emailed Santa the link for the ice machines. Maybe this year. I've been good so far :)
em, you are brilliant. I am bringing my ice chest and every mug and thermos when I go tot he hospital.
serena, I would be at wegman's daily if it was closer. You are right, OF COURSE they have it. They have everything I love. The nurse told me about the constipation. I think I will have to up my fruit and fiber.
KATIE - that is crazy! don't get drunk off of your mouthwash!
Azucar - Oh, the days of Day's. I miss it so. The littlest neighborhood grocery store. They are so hometown feel I have no doubt that if I asked for a back scratch from the checkout lady, she would give me one.
Allison - I think I am going to study it out more and write a post about it on Section 89.
Tenille and JEss -- In high school I would get a grilled cheese and a cherry limeade sluch like every day. man........... that is what I want for lunch now!!!
I loved your "does it look fishy" jokes and the rainbow with a pot of ice pellets part. Funny post. Funny sister.
Walgreens fountain soda machine!
Walgreens fountain soda machine!
I so look forward to meeting you. Jen sent me over to your blog and I'm hooked.
I love the ice pellets. Didn't crave them as much with my last baby, but with my first I would buy a big bag at Macey's.
I love you anonymous. I have a Walgreens like 10 minutes from my house. I will go there today! I didn't even know that they had soda machines! Forget the soda though -- I want the ice!!!!!!
Sherry - Which Jen sent you? I know a few Jens. I am glad you like what I write. I really enjoy writing.
Oh, and Macey's must be like the ultimate pregnancy one-stop shop with the bags of ice pellets and KING KONG CONES!!!!! It would be a daily for me!
anemia. dang. I was hoping we were all moving past that... at least you'll know where all the good ice is soon.
First- congrats!...on being pregnant, not being anemic :( I was ready to post about Walgreens, but someone beat me to it. Not all of them have soda machines, but if you find one that does, the ice is PERFECT. I've always had problems with anemia- especially when I was pregnant (back when dinosaurs roamed the earth)- so ice is VERY important to me. We have serious discussions in our family about "good" ice and where to find it! lol
I am dying right now!!! I hate to say it but we have a Sonic like 5 minutes from my casa. If I could you know I would ship you those blessed ice pellets wrapped in some Anthro tissue paper!
Two things:
First, the wonderful lady whose house Ashley had the wedding dinner at had a whole huge ice machine that made that kind of ice! Did you notice that we had it in our water?
Second, I hate iron supplements. They make me so sick. They have slow-release tablets, though, so that you won't get sick.
Okay, one more thing. Tyler and I probably talk about you guys like every other day and how much we always miss you all and we CANNOT WAIT for the magical (and maybe imaginary) day that we live by each other so we can hang out every day.
Love you!!
